Step 2: How do I Renew my license?

You are applying to renew the following license(s):

You may receive a courtesy notice from BAR to remind you that your license is about to expire. If you do not receive a courtesy reminder notice from BAR, you can apply for a renewal of your Brake/Lamp license by following these steps:

  1. Download Brake Adjuster & Lamp Adjuster application.
  2. Include a check or money order for the renewal fee. The fee for renewing your Brake and/or Lamp license is $5 per license type.
  3. Mail your fees and renewal request to the address listed below:

Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA)
P.O. BOX 989001
West Sacramento, CA 95789-9001

Warning: It is your responsibility to renew your license regardless of whether you receive a Courtesy Notice from BAR. Submission of insufficient fees will result in the delay of renewing your license.

Remember: Adjuster licenses are valid for four years and will expire on the last day of your birth month.

How is my application evaluated?

All applications go through a review process. You should allow 2-3 weeks for the application review process and notification of examination eligibility.

What if there is a problem with my renewal request?

If there is a problem with your renewal request, you may receive a Deficiency Letter from BAR, requesting clarification or providing further instruction. In most cases, the Deficiency Letter can be faxed back to BAR with the requested information, to speed up the process.

If the problem(s) with the application are serious enough, the renewal may be rejected. If a renewal request is rejected, the rejection letter will describe the renewal applicant rights regarding a possible appeal or reconsideration of the renewal.
